Richard Niel Mellinger, 74, of Amarillo, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Paramount Terrace Christian Church with the Rev. Brent Ashby officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St.
Mr. Mellinger was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a confirmed Lutheran. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Malta 318 of Burlington, Iowa; Scottish Rite in Lubbock; Amarillo Moose Lodge 1371; Khiva Shrine in Amarillo; and American Legion Post 54 in Amarillo.
His sporting interests and activities were goose and duck hunting, fishing and baseball and he was an automobile racer for more than 15 years. In 1948, he started work for the Civil Service Commission at Iowa Ordnance Plant in Burlington, Iowa. In 1951, he went to work with Mason & Hanger, Silas Mason Corp., in the position of material expeditor and quality assurance inspector with the Atomic Energy Commission at the Burlington Iowa AEC Plant. He later transferred with the AEC to the Amarillo area office of the Pantex Plant in December 1973. He retired from the Department of Energy in December 1988 as chief of product acceptance section of the Quality Assurance Branch AAO Pantex Plant in Amarillo.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Graham of Amarillo; two sisters, Marilyn Seibel and Annette Peart of Bettendorf, Iowa; and two brothers, Devon Mellinger of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Robert Davis of Sarasota, Fla. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmie Dean Mellinger, on Dec. 26, 1982.
The family suggests memorials be to Khiva Shrine Temple, 305 E. Fifth Ave., Amarillo, TX 79101, or to Paramount Terrace Christian Church building fund, 4000 Mays Ave., Amarillo, TX 79109.
