JACOB DEWEIN

The death of Mr. Jacob Dewein, which occurred yesterday, makes another vacancy in the company of old settlers who have added and enjoyed the growth of our town for many years for many years. When he first came here, Burlington was but a little settlement among the Indians. He has wrough among us for more than thirty years and has witnessed the advance from the frontier hamlet to the bustling city.
Mr. Dewein was a native of Bavaria where he was born in 1808. He came to Burlington in the Spring of 1841; and has been a resident of our city ever since. For nearly thirty years he followed his trade, a shoemaker. A few years since, his age and bodily delicacy force him to quit his daily labor and he established a family grocery store on Washington street, which he conducted until his death. For thirty-two years he was a quiet, industrious citizen of Burlington. He was well known and highly respected. His brother, Mr. Isaac Dewein, the only remaining one of five brothers, who came here in the old times. Jacob is the fourth who has been laid to rest in our cemetery.
