Earl George Hopkins, 61, of Corydon, formerly of West Burlington, died at 6:00 PM Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the Flagstaff Medical Center while on vacation in Flagstaff, AZ.

Born November 23, 1952, in Macomb, IL, he was the son of George Earl and Loraine Margaret Gunn Hopkins. On May 16, 1981, he married Margaret Anne Fichera in Salisbury, MO.

Earl worked as a loan officer at Corydon State Bank. He also worked as a farm loan officer and program tech for the Farm Service Agency in Des Moines, Henry, Cedar, and Benton counties.

He attended Williamstown, MO schools thru the first part of high school. His senior year brought him to Canton High School due to the closing of the Williamstown high school graduating with the class of 1970.

He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Corydon, IA and a former member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, and Wayne Optimist Club of Corydon. He was also involved in several other organizations in the Corydon community. Earl's passion was to "Bring out the best in kids," working in various functions with the Optimist. He loved working on his farm, gardening, camping, golfing, and bowling. He bowled a 298 at Roosevelt Lanes back in the day.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Anne Hopkins of Corydon; his mother, Loraine Margaret Hopkins of Williamstown, MO; two sisters, Mary Kirchner of Canton, MO and Rita Hopkins of Wayland, MO; and four brothers, Gail (Beth) Hopkins of Kahoka, MO, John (Pam) Hopkins of Quincy, IL, Kent Hopkins of Columbia, MO, and Paul (Amy) Hopkins of Canton, MO; one aunt and uncle, Dr. Bill and Marge Hopkins of Carrollton, IL; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, aunts, uncles, one sister-in-law, and his grandparents.

Visitation will be from noon until 6:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM Sunday, July 13, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Hopkins will be 9:30 AM Monday, July 14, 2014, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Rev. Father David G. Steinle as the Celebrant and Father Christopher Pisut as the Concelebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in West Burlington. A time of food and fellowship will be held in St. Mary's Parish Center following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Optimist International Foundation and the Optimist International Childhood Cancer Campaign.
