Edward McDade, 85, of Burlington, died at 4:42 AM Saturday, July 5, 2014, at his home.
Born October 30, 1928, in East St. Louis, IL, he was the son of Edward M. and Helen L. Fauth McDade. On January 16, 1953, he married Rilla B. Hammock in Macon, Georgia. She preceded him in death on September 24, 2006.
Edward signed with the Chicago Cubs right out of high school in 1946. After his retirement from baseball in 1957, he worked as a purchasing manager for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, where he worked for 39 years.
He graduated from Central Catholic High School in East St. Louis, IL. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.
He was an U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict as a Corporal.
He was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington. He was an avid sports fan, especially baseball, and he enjoyed doing New York Times crosswords and puzzles. He also loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include two daughters, Amy Allen and Susan Wilson, both of Burlington; two sons, Joseph (Barbara) McDade of Overland Park, KS and Scott (Kimberly) McDade of Spring Hill, KS; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. McDade will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant and Rev. Father David G. Steinle as the Concelebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held at St. Mary's Parrish Center following burial.
Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice and Great River Medical Center Acute Care Unit in memory of Ed.
