Mt. Union (IA) -- Carl Walter Smith, 87, Mt. Union, died at 2:05 p.m.. Friday, April 23, at Henry County Health Center.

He was born July 3, 1894, at Burlington, to Edward and Julia Schmidt Venghaus. He married Alma Van Osdol, February 26, 1918, at Burlington. She died January 30, 1974.

Mr. Smith managed the Middletown elevator and, later, the Mt. Union elevator. He was former mayor of Mt. Union and a member of Mt. Union United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School superintendent for many years.

Surviving: three daughters, Mrs. Helen Bailey, Fairbanks, Alaska, Mrs. Marcille McAllister, Mt. Union, and Mrs. Lola Wick, Downers Grove, Illinois; one sister, Mrs. Alice Young, Burlington; two brothers, Ralph Venghaus and Wilbert Venghaus, both of Burlington; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Mt. Union United Methodist Church, the Reverend Karen Merrill; Middletown Cemetery. Elliott Chapel, New London, is in charge of arrangements.
