John W. Van Osdol Dies in Tama Town
Veteran of Civil War Succumbs at Home of Daughter at Age of 82.

John W. Van Osdol, 82 years old and a veteran of the civil war, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Neal R. Walker, in Tama township, at 9:00 o'clock yesterday morning.

Mr. Van Osdol was born in Benton township on January 20, 1844. In 1862 he enlisted in Company G, 25th Iowa Infantry, and was in service until he received an honorable discharge in 1864. He was in several of the more important battles of the war including Arkansas Post and Vicksburg.

On October 10, he was married to Miss Lydia A. Pool of Benton township, who preceded him in death. He was a member of the M. E. church of Tama Town and of the G. A. R. of Mediapolis.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs Nora M. Walker of Danville and Mrs. Zora M. Walker of Tama Town; one son, Thomas O. Van Osdol of Danville: five sisters, Mrs. M. M. Boyce and Mattie Van Osdol of Wichita Falls, Texas, Mrs. Henry Walker of Mediapolis, Mrs. Minnie Hollinger of Gerard, O., and Mrs. Birdie Piper, of Burlington. Four grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren also survive. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.
