Mrs. Mildred Marie Rieke Ross, 97, of Burlington died at 10:04 a.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born October 26, 1917 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Arthur C. and Anna (Huneke) Rieke. On January 1, 1941 she married Tom Andrew Ross in Burlington. He preceded her in death on January 18, 1986.
Mrs. Ross was self-employed as a custom dressmaker from the age of 10. She was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. Starting when her daughter Carol was in kindergarten, Mrs. Ross became a kindergarten and then Sunday school teacher for the next 65 years, retiring this past year. She was the historian for Oak St. Baptist Church as well as for her family. She loved e-mailing her family. Mrs. Ross was also a member of Hawkeye Heritage Quilters.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Mike) Stacy of Carrollton, Texas and Mary (Art) Rieke of Durango, Colorado; son-in-law, John C. Ossian of Burlington; six grandchildren, Robin (Eddy) Woodfin of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Anne Perry of Mansfield, Texas, John T. Ossian of Denver, Colorado, Jennifer Ossian of Oquawka, Illinois, and Ronnie Stacy and Daniel Stacy both of Dallas, Texas; seven great grandchildren; and one sister, Lorraine Ross of La Jara, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Clarence Rieke and two sisters, Lucille Johnston and Elizabeth Reif.
Friends may call from noon until 7 p.m. Friday, November 7th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m.
The funeral service for Mrs. Ross will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 8th, at Oak Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Karas officiating. Interment will be at 9:30 a.m. in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for Oak Street Baptist Church and Great River Hospice.
