Hazel Margaret Beckman, 96, of Burlington, died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 21, 1906, in Prairie Grove, she was the daughter of William F. and Anna Pletscher Beckman.

Miss Beckman taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Prairie Grove. She was a past secretary to the dean of Burlington Community College and worked at Jones Park Accounting Firm in Burlington. She retired from Western Union after 30 years.

She was a graduate of Danville High School and attended Cedar Falls Teachers College. She was a member of First United Church of Christ, RSVP, Des Moines County Historical Society, Quilters of the church and AARP.

Survivors include one brother, Max Beckman of Danville; three sisters, Helen Taeger of Morning Sun, Florecne Landwehr of Burlington and Anna P. Henton of Los Angeles; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one infant brother.

Visitation will begin after noon today at Prugh's Chapel. There will be no family visitation.

The funeral for Miss Beckman will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Prugh's Chapel, with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for First United Church of Christ.
