Thomas William Houtz, 77, of Burlington, died at Great River Medical Center, on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 10:50 a.m.

Born on April 27, 1934, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of George H. and Lorrinda Fern Umphrey Houtz. He married Frances Doreen Kerr on December 5, 1953 in Burlington, Iowa.

Thomas was employed by National Research from 1954 until 1972. He then went to work as a machinist for Murray Turbo until his retirement in 1995.
He enjoyed woodworking, flying model airplanes, cooking, fishing, playing cards and going to the Casino for breakfast. Tom loved cats and dogs. He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; two daughters, Pamela Marie Verstraete of East Moline, IL and Christina Crear of Burlington, IA; one son, Jeffrey Thomas Houtz of Burlington, IA; four grandchildren, Amy, Dustin, Leah and Gabryel; six great-grandchildren, Karissa, Avery, Jackson, Zakiyah, Sameah and Olivia; 2 brothers, George Houtz Jr. of Burlington and Johnny Houtz of Pasadena, TX and several nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Liz Hudson and Beatrice Hoambrecker; two brothers, Gilbert Houtz and Quentin Houtz.
