Helen Louise Brown, age 91, of Mediapolis and formerly of Kingston, died Saturday morning, August 16, 2014, at the Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab in Mediapolis. The daughter of William and Johanna Poehl Rickman, she was born on March 17, 1923, in Burlington. Helen married Willard Brown on August 8, 1943, in St. Louis, Missouri. He preceded her in death on January 6, 2008.

She graduated from Burlington High School in 1941, and received her normal training at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls also in 1941. She taught in one room schools in Des Moines County for several years and then had done some substitute teaching. She was a homemaker, a seamstress and had provided child care.

Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kingston. She had served as the church Treasurer and was the church Historian for 25 years.

Her family includes a son, Stephen & Sheila Brown of Whitewood, South Dakota; three grandsons, Chris & Michelle Groves, Shawn & Amy Brown, and Joshua & Terri Brown; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Richard Upton of Dallas, Texas and William Rickman of Geneseo, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Willard; a grandson; and a brother, Howard.

The funeral ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at the Kingston United Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Earlene Lekwa. Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery in Mediapolis. The family will meet friends from 1:30 to 2:30 on Wednesday at the church. A fellowship lunch will follow the burial at the church.
