Mr. Hezekiah Eggleston died at his home in Augusta on the morning of May 8th at half past four. Mr. Eggleston was one of Lee couty's old settlers, having come to South Augusta with the Moffet colony, which arrived at Flint Hills May 12, 1835. The colony consisted of forty persons who were the first white settlers in Augusta. Remaining here for some years he then returned to his former home in Trumbull county, Ohio, where he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Barb in 1844, returning again to Augusta where they have spent a long, happy married life. He was a good citizen, a good neighbor, an exceptionally kind and loving father and husband. He leaves his aged wife, four sons, two daughters, beside one brother and one sister to mourn their loss. Willingly he crossed the river to better land, knowing although he could not return they could go to him. He was born in Trumbull county, Ohio, December 20, 1820, and is believed to have been the last living member of the Moffet Colony.
