Steve Shumaker

Steven D. Shumaker, 65, of Danville died at 7:20 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family after a two year battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Born December 19, 1946, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Carl and Madelyn Eckey Shumaker. On July 29, 1978, he married Sue Fuhrer.

Steve farmed in the Danville area all of his life.

He attended Danville High School, Burlington Junior College, Louisiana State University and Iowa Wesleyan College.

He had served on boards for Farm Bureau, New London Coop, YMCA and Jaggar Cemetery. He loved farming and sports, especially basketball. He was an Iowa Hawkeye fan and was an exceptionally loyal friend. He enjoyed oldies music or any songs his kids were performing. Above all, Steve loved his family.

Survivors include his wife, Sue; three daughters, Stacy Farr of Des Moines, IA, Sally (Luke) Bennett of Ankeny, IA, and Stephany (Tony) Messer of Waukee, IA; one son, Scott Shumaker of Waukee, IA; six grandchildren, Griffin, Claire, Quinn and Hudson Messer and Clark and Nile Bennett; his mother, Madelyn Shumaker of Danville; one sister, Carolyn Mapel of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl; his sister, Vickie; his brother-in-law, Dick; his sister-in-law, Jane; and his grandparents.

Visitation will be from noon until 8:00 p.m., with the family to receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 23, 2012, at Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Shumaker will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at Thielen Funeral Home, with Russ Reed officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Harmony Bible Church following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Danville Athletic Booster Club and Danville Rescue Squad.
