Frances Skarlis

Efrosini J. "Frances" Skarlis, 92, of Burlington died at 9:53 a.m. Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 21, 1919, in Gargaliani, Messinia, Greece, she was the daughter of Anastacios and Kyriaki Yiannopoulos Poulopoulos. On July 27, 1947, she married John J. Skarlis in Strofila, Halkida, Greece. He died Jan. 2, 1989.

Mrs. Skarlis was a homemaker and worked briefly at Selby's and Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.

She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Rock Island, Ill.

She was known as an exceptional cook and gardener and was dedicated to her family and their well being.

May her memory be eternal.

Survivors include three daughters, Jane Keil of Flower Mound, Texas, Joanne Ashmun of Longmont, Colo., and Morfoula Rowan of Burlington; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, where family will receive friends.

The funeral for Mrs. Skarlis will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Thielen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Christ Margellos officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A time of food and fellowship will be in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following burial.

Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice House, St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Rock Island and Zion United Church of Christ.
