Wallace Thye

Wallace Fred Thye, 83, of Wever, formerly of rural Danville and Burlington, died early Wednesday morning, June 19, 2002, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born Feb. 15, 1919, in Hillsboro, Kan., he was the son of Henry and Abbie Thye. On April 8, 1939, he married Dorothy Bohlen in Burlington.
Mr. Thye worked for Iowa Southern Utilities and J.I. Case Co. and then farmed in rural Des Moines and Van Buren County. He owned and operated Thye's Town Club Food Store in Stockport and was agency manager of Farm Bureau Insurance for Van Buren County. He returned to Burlington in 1958 and worked for Brayton Chemical Co. for 26 years until his retirement in 1983. He lived a short time in Cedar Rapids and Mount Vernon as manager of the warehouses for Brayton Chemical Co.
He was a 1937 graduate of Mediapolis High School. He was an active member of the churches he belonged to, including Oak Street Baptist Church in Burlington, Stockport Methodist and Twin Pines Baptist in Cedar Rapids. He served in many capacities in these churches as Sunday school teacher, superintendent, deacon and trustee. He also served for more than 10 summers at Village Creek Bible Camp. He used his talents of working with tools to make the camp a better place for children who came each summer. He loved working around children and helping them. He was a charter member and first president of the Lions Club in Stockport.
He was a wood carver, specializing in full-size walnut ducks, carving more than 140. He also made beautiful furniture and marble games.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Forrest Thye of Blacksburg, Va.; two daughters, Lorraine Pierrot of Wever and Jerilee Inghram of Wildwood, Mo.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Frieda McCallum of Yuma, Ariz.; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will begin after noon today at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Thye will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Oak Street Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Presley officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Grove Cemetery in rural West Burlington. Following the burial service, friends and family are invited back to Oak Street Social Hall for fellowship and refreshments.
Memorials have been established for Oak Street Baptist Church and Village Creek Bible Camp.
