William Hathaway III
William Franklin Hathaway III, 75, of Danville, died at 4:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport.
Born June 2, 1927, in Muscatine, he was the son of Charles Raymond and Gertrude Mae Peck Hathaway. On July 24, 1950, he married Edith Chatfield in Iowa City.
Mr. Hathaway worked as a switchman for the Rock Island Railroad for 23 years and then for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown for 23 years.
He attended Muscatine High School. He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a member of New London Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7641 and American Legion Post 52 of Burlington. He enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling and, more recently, cooking. He was a Navy veteran, joining in 1951 and serving in the 47th Infantry headquartered in the Yukon.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Larry Hathaway of Cedar Falls, Scott Hathaway of Kahoka, Mo., and Billy Hathaway in the Navy in Italy; one daughter, Pamela Hathaway; six grandchildren; two sisters, Clara Hardy of Indianapolis, and Patricia Fisher of Muscatine; one brother, Gerry Hathaway of Aledo, Ill.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
Visitation will begin after noon on Tuesday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Hathaway will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Patti Webb officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Grove Cemetery in West Burlington.
A memorial has been established for the Peace Lutheran Church building fund.
