Howard E. Smith

NEW LONDON - Howard E. Smith, 79, died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at Burlington Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 21, 1901, at Mt. Union, the son of Francis and Esther Funk Smith. He married Frances Miller, Nov. 15, 1921, at Mediapolis.

A farmer, he operated Smith Trucking, Mt. Union, and later worked as a maintenance operator for Henry County. He was a member of several Masonic organizations.

Surviving: his wife, of the home; a son, Noble, Geneseo, Ill.; a daughter, Mrs. Phyllis Swedenburg, Indianola; a brother, Delmer, Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Irma Barnett, Des Moines; and four grandchildren.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Elliot Chapel, New London, the Rev. Arthur Brent; Trinity Cemetery. Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Elliott Chapel.
