Eugene "Gene" Sumner Hubbard, 83, of Hermann, Mo., and formerly of Burlington, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at the home of his daughter.

Born Feb. 16, 1924, in Cedar County, Mo., he was the son of Henry and Lula Sumner Hubbard. On Nov. 23,1946, he married Mary Evelyn Peavler in Burlington. She died May 26, 1993. He later married Wilma R. Krone.

Mr. Hubbard was employed by Midwest Biscuit Co. where he was in charge of boiler maintenance and later as a welder for J.I. Case Co. Together with his father, he owned and operated a contract and remodeling business. He was employed for 23 years by Burlington School District where he became supervisor of buildings and grounds. During this time he served a term as president of Iowa School Sanitation Managers.

He graduated from Novelty High School in Missouri in 1942 and attended Northeast Missouri State College in Kirksville. Mr. Hubbard was a member of Patriot Lodge 650 AF&AM of Burlington where he was worshipful master in 1959. In 2001, he was presented a 50-year jewel at Hermann Lodge 123 AF&AM in Hermann where he also served as worshipful master. He was a member of Hermann United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of Hermann; one daughter, Rebecca L. Hubbard of Council Bluffs; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents and one bother.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Masonic rites will be at 6 p.m. Sunday

The funeral service for Mr. Hubbard will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Donald Hoornstra officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
