Delbert Nelson

Delbert I. "Dick" Nelson, 91, of Mount Pleasant, died at 12:50 p.m. Sunday, June 19, 2005, at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.

Born March 1, 1914, near Burlington, he was the son of Albert E. and Hattie Mae Arnold Nelson. On Oct. 31, 1934, he married Verda A. Aubrecht.

Mr. Nelson was a lifelong farmer, first in Lone Tree and then west of Mount Pleasant. In 1956, he sold some of the farm west of Mount Pleasant to create the town of Westwood.

During World War II, he, along with many other farmers, was assigned production goals and quotas by the War Department, which he exceeded for the duration of the war effort. During that time period he also assisted in maintaining the levees along the Iowa River. He was an avid reader who loved history and often visited the historical sites of his readings.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jackie Wagler of Omaha, Neb., Sondra Cochran of Mount Pleasant and Nancy Staal of Pewaukee, Wis.; one son, James Nelson of South Glastonbury, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Zaiss of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

The funeral for Mr. Nelson will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Old Stone Cemetery southwest of Mediapolis.

Memorials have been established for the American Cancer Society and the Foundation for Paget's Disease.
