Dorothy Lee Bennett, 97, of Watertown, S.D., died Friday, Sept. 7, 2007, in a local care center.

Born Aug. 8, 1910, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Phil and Legia Hansen Carspecken. In 1932, she married Mark W. Pistorius. He died in 1971. She later married Myles Bennett. He died in 1998.

Mrs. Bennett was an elementary education teacher. She served as president of the Central Council of the Parent Teacher Association in Burlington, and was a member of the city's Race Relations Board. She was a graduate of Burlington Junior College and the University of Iowa.

She moved to La Mesa, Calif., following her first husband's death and her retirement, then lived in San Diego and later Benet Place in Watertown, S.D. In 2000, she moved to Prairie Crossings Assisted Living and in 2004 to Jenkins Living Center.

She belonged to the Unitarian Fellowships in Burlington and San Diego. She had a special interest in children's literature, and was an avid reader her entire life. She also enjoyed dance as a young woman.

Survivors include one daughter, Legia Spicer of Watertown; one son, Alan Pistorius of Lincoln, Vt.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Phil Carspecken of Wausau, Wis.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

A memorial service for Mrs. Bennett will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown. There will be no visitation.

A memorial has been established for the South Dakota Peace and Justice Center.
