Mary J. Hannum was born in Mediapolis; Des Moines County, Iowa and moved to Des Moines; Polk County, Iowa in 1945. She was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College and Drake University. She taught for the Des Moines School System including Perkins and Park Avenue elementary schools retiring in 1977. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Beta Sigma Phi and various teaching organizations. Mary J. Hannum, 97, passed away Wednesday; December 20, 2006 at her home at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines. Those left to mourn her passing are her two sisters, Ruby Crowder of Burlington; Des Moines County, Iowa and Dorothy Amyx of Santa Barbara; Santa Barbara County, California. One sister-in-law, Jeanette Hannum of Industry; McDonough County, Illinois. Also seven nieces, nephews and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Mabel (Ping) Hannum; four brothers, one sister; one niece and one nephew. Her body has been cremated and graveside services will be held at Kossuth Cemetery in Mediapolis, Iowa at a later date.
