The Burlington Hawkeye

Frederick Henry Wilke

On May 8th in Sacramento, California, he departed this world with his loved ones at his side.

The son of Henry and Hulda (Breneke) Wilke, he was born in Burlington on September 23, 1912. He was preceded in death (1995) by his warm and witty wife of 53 years, Lois Applegate. He is survived by his sisters Edith Lundquist and Alice Leedom of Burlington (other sisters included the late Hazel Hill, Phyllis Wagner, Pauline Johnson and Violet Thompson); daughters, Susan Wilke and Olene Chard (Ernie); grandsons, Jon (Amy) and Christopher Holmes; and great-grandchildren, Jeshua and Grace--all of Sacramento.

The probable cause was sawing the last load of firewood for his kitchen stove's firebox which he used in the morning "just to take the chill off." He was especially proud of his role as a welder at the San Francisco Bay Kaiser Shipyards building the Liberty Ships used in World War II. He enjoyed nearly perfect health for over ninety years and continued to live independently with a positive outlook on life and an insatiable curiosity for all things new and old including checking out The Hawk Eye on his computer. He will be forever missed by his family and friends.

Private services will be held at the Applegate Pioneer Cemetery in Yoncalla, Oregon.
