Ruth Chandler

Ruth Kelley Chandler, 82, of 1024 S. Avenue B, Washington, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1996, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Born Jan. 26, 1911, at Danville, she was the daughter of Louis and Cora Gappen Medefesser. She married William Dale Kelley on July 23, 1930, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He died in 1975. She later married J. Wilbur Chandler June 4, 1988.

She was raised in Danville and graduated in 1927 from Danville High School.

Mrs. Chandler was a homemaker for a number of years and was a board member of the Women's Commission of the National Association of Congregational Churches. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Washington, PEO Chapter J of Washington, the Fortnightly Club and Questers. She had served as past president of the Burlington Chapter HU of PEO and was former past president and member of King's Daughters. She had been active in the First Congregational Church in Burlington, where she directed the children's choir for 10 years.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Neal Kelley of Beatrice, Neb.; a daughter, Marilyn Regan of Absecon, N.J.; five grandchildren; a stepson, Stanley Chandler of Hampton; a stepdaughter, Patricia Herrick of Boone; and two stepgrandchildren.

Besides her first husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Boyd Kelley.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 830 p.m. at the Eden Funeral Home in Washington.

The funeral for Mrs. Chandler will be at 1030 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Washington.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the First Congregational Church in Burlington. Burial will be in the Jaggar Cemetery, Danville.

Memorials have been established for the Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund and the United Methodist Church.
