William Alexander

William "Bill" Ray Alexander, 73, of Burlington, died from complications of Lou Gehrig Disease (ALS) at 930 a.m. Friday, April 18, 1997, at his home.

Born Aug. 29, 1923, in Memphis, Mo., he was the son of John William and Gladys Lucille Keach Alexander. On May 26, 1944, he married Betty Joan Odell in Memphis.

Mr. Alexander was a 1941 graduate of Memphis High School and a World War II Air Force veteran. He was electrical superintendent for Iowa Army Ammunition Plant Atomic Energy Commission for 16 years. He then worked as an electrician for Keith's Electric. He retired in 1988.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, 40-year member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and 30-year member of YMCA.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Connee Stevens of Burlington; one son, John Alexander of Danville; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leta Kurtz of Burlington and Bettie Durand of Kansas City, Mo.; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 830 p.m. Sunday at Lunning Chapel. There will be no family visitation.

The funeral for Mr. Alexander will be 2 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with the Revs. Susan Krummell and Forrest Krummell officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery in rural Danville.

A memorial has been established for ALS Association.
