DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Mrs. Sylvia Fitzgerald, 62, of Dyersville, died after a battle with cancer Saturday April 1, 2000, at home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a Dyersville Legion Auxiliary and New Vienna Veterans of Foreign Wars rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish scripture service at 7 p.m.

Mrs. Fitzgerald worked at Mercy Health Center for 24 years.

She was born on Dec. 25, 1937, in Luxemburg, daughter of Aloysius and Leonetta (Kluesner) Gassmann. She married Robert Fitzgerald on May 18, 1957, in Worthington.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the New Vienna VFW Auxiliary.

Surviving are her husband, Robert; three daughters, Judy (David) Kirsch, of Dyersville, Jayne Fitzgerald, of Edgewood, and Jill (Bart) Schneck, of Ackley; two sons, Brad, of Dallas, Texas, and Barry (Gena) Fitzgerald, of Liberty, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Kerri, Brian and Krista Kirsch, all of Dyersville, Travis Fitzgerald, of Edgewood, Jordan and Katy Fitzgerald, both of Dallas, and Lisa and Katelyn Schneck, both of Ackley; her father, Aloysius Gassmann, of Dubuque; five sisters, Eileen (William) Besler, of Dubuque, Betty Gotto, of Bankston, Gladys (Paul) Knepper, of Dubuque, Mary (Jim) Schnier, of Bellevue, and Connie Lueck, of Cuba City, Wis.; six brothers, Lyle Gassmann and Leroy (Marge) Gassmann, both of Dubuque, Bob (Bev) Gassmann, of St. Landry, La., Marvin (Pat) Gassmann, of New Vienna; Ken Gassmann, of Borrego Springs, Calif., and Jerry Gassmann, of Davenport; and a sister-in-law, Betty Gassmann, of Dyersville.

She was preceded in death by her mother; and a brother, John Gassmann.

A Sylvia Fitzgerald Memorial Fund has established.

The family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville, Hospice of Dubuque, Dr. Prasad, Dr. Kukla and staff for their kindness and caring support during Sylvia's illness.
