Mary Lawman was born in Germany, March 27, 1842. When she was eight years of age her people came to the United States and settled in New York State, in the vicinity of Buffalo. On March 4, 1867, she was united in marriage with Peter Broadway. Immediately after their marriage Mr. Broadway came west and secured employment on a farm in Prairie Township. He worked for a farmer during the year of 67’, and late in the fall he returned to New York State, and the following spring he came to this county and brought his wife with him. At that time they settled on a farm in Prairie Township, just south of the Sand Springs Church. Her they lived until March 1, 1893, when they retired from farm life and moved to Manchester. they built their home on Gay Street, where they spent the reminder of their lives.
Mrs. Broadway is survived by one son, C. J. Broadway, and one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Smith, both of this city. She also leaves five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and three sisters; Mrs. Hannah Collard of this city; Mrs. Katherine Moore of Caro, Michigan; Mrs. James Setter of Silver Creek, New York; and one brother, George Lawman, of North Collins, New York.
Mrs. Broadway was a woman of many loveable traits of character. She was the very embodiment of kindness and gentleness. Those who came to her in trouble and need always found her ready and able to help. She was especially fond of the little folks. This part of her nature manifested itself far beyond the immediate circle of her family, and to all the youngsters of the neighborhood she was “Grandma” Broadway.
The death of Mrs. Broadway removes from this community one of the truly Christian women, and in her passing the family is called upon to mourn the loss of a kind devoted mother and grandmother. In this sorrow that has come to them they have the sympathy of a host of friends.
