HIRAM D. COWLES

The death of Hiram D. Cowles occurred Sunday morning, March 20, 1910 at the Solders Home at Marshalltown. Mr. Cowles formerly resided near Lamont and the following is taken from the Lamont Leader of last week.

"Hiram D. Cowles was born in Belchertown, Mass., Dec 30, 1832. When about eleven years old he came with his parents to Kane County, Ill. where he resided ten years. In 1853 he came to Delaware county and preempted land near the Campton School which he afterwards deeded from the government. In 1859 he was united in marriage with Sarah Emmerson to which union four children were born. Three died in early life. John Cowles lives in Dakota but his address could not be located so he was not present at the funeral. He also leaves one brother E. S. Cowles of this city and one sister, Mrs. Mary L. Burr of Carbondale, Illinois, with other relatives to mourn his death.

With his wife he joined the First Baptist church of this city and has since been a member. His life was not open or conspicuous but the sweetest flowers sometimes bloom and flourish in the secluded neck or the shades of the silent dell. He was a soldier of the Civil War in Company G 7th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. The G. A. R. Post of this city of which he was an honored member attended in a body as did also the W. R. C. The funeral was held Tuesday from the First Baptist church at 10;30 a.m., services being conducted by the pastor, Rev. Searey, and the body was laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery beside that of his wife who had preceded him nine years"
