MARTIN A. HAWKER

Martin A. Hawker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hawker, of Spring Branch died in the hospital at Anamosa, Wednesday night, following an operation for appendicitis performed on the same evening. Martin was taken ill with appendicitis on Wednesday, June 22nd, while at work on his brother's place near Dundee. The following day he was brought to the home of his parents, at Spring Branch, where he was given every attention possible. After a few days his condition seemed to be very much improved and those in attendance had every reason to believe that his complete recovery was but a matter of a few days' time. Early on the morning of June 29th, complications became evident and a turn for the worse was noted. That afternoon the young man was taken to the hospital at Anamosa and immediately upon his arrival it was deemed necessary to operate. Death claimed the young man immediately following the operation.

Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Earlville Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. H. Wendt, pastor of the church, had charge of the services. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery. The services were attended by a large number, who had gathered at the church to pay their tribute of respect to a young life cut short at the very time of greatest usefulness.

Martin Hawker was born on the home farm east of Manchester on September 28th, 1902, and spent all of his life on the home farm. He was a member of the Junior Class of Manchester High School, and had he been spared would have completed his High School course with the class of 1922. He was an ambitious and dependable boy, obedient unto his parents and thoughtful and kind to the brothers and sisters in the home. When he was thirteen years of age he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and was at the time of his death a devout member of the Lutheran church of Earlville.

Martin leaves to mourn his untimely passing the father and mother, two brothers, Henry Hawker of Dundee, Ernest, at home; and three sisters, Miss Mary Hawker, who lives with her brother at Dundee, and Misses Martha and Ruth Hawker, at home. He also leaves a large number of other more distant relatives. A brother Benjamin, preceded him in death some years ago. The passing of this boy brings to the home the deepest sorrow. The place he held in the hearts of the parents and the brothers and sisters will not be filled. Martin was good, honest, dependable boy, beloved by those in the home and school, and while the purpose to be served by his passing at eighteen years is a mystery now, some day, in the Providence of an all-wise Ruler, the sorrowing family will understand. In the great sorrow through which the family is passing they have the profound sympathy of their friends.
