PROMINENT RYAN WOMAN
CALLED BY DEATHEllen Behan was born in County Waterford, Ireland, May 15th, 1838 and came to America when a small child with her parents and settled in Massachusetts, where they remained a few years; later removing to Delaware County in 1855. She was married to James McElliott in 1866. She died in Ryan, June 7th, 1917.
Mrs. McElliott is survived by the following children; Mrs. Nick Welter, Miss Mary McElliott, J. R. McElliott, P. F. McElliott, W. T. McElliott; James McElliott, D. A. McElliott, all of Ryan, and Rev. T. J. McElliott, of New Hampton, Iowa; one brother, Patrick Behan, Ryan, Iowa; and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Duggan, Ryan; Mrs. Ann Montgomery, Iowa City; Mrs. Maggie McNulty, Stockton, Kansas, and Hanora Behan of Dubuque survive her.
Funeral services were held at St. Patrick’s Church, Ryan, June 9th. Mass was celebrated by her son, Rev. T. J. McElliott, Rev. P. J. Behan, a nephew, and Rev. T. Conroy, a cousin. The sermon was preached by Rev. Father Malloy, who dwelt up on the strong Christian attributes of her life, testifying to the fact that God was first in all her actions and all other things were secondary. He then contrasted her early life in leaving Ireland and on arriving in America with the life of today. Very few people lived in this community when she and her family arrived here; the nearest church being located in Independence. Her life was an exemplification of all that is high and noble in life; leaving an example for all to follow.
The following acted as pallbearers:
James, Joseph and Willie Weiler (Welter), three grandsons, and John and Frank Behan and John Duggan, three nephews
