Ruby “LeVonne” (Carty) Splinter, 90, of San Diego, California died Monday, June 2, 2008 at the Sun Garden Terrace in Lemon Grove, California, following a brief illness.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home and Crematory in Earlville by Rev. Virginia Stiles. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Earlville. Family will greet friends one hour before services at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home.

LeVonne was born July 3, 1917 to Glenn and Ruby Carty in Earlville. Following graduation from Earlville High School, she attended business school in Dubuque, Iowa and was employed there until 1938. LeVonne married Charles “Chollie” H. Splinter in 1940. The couple moved to San Diego, California where LeVonne was an Executive Secretary for General Dynamics for over 25 years.

LeVonne and Chollie teamed together to raise dahlias as a hobby for almost 65 years. They were instrumental in building and developing the San Diego Dahlia Society. Their best joy was to show beautiful blooms and take home top prizes, some of which they crossbred and named for family and friends. They always attended and entered their flowers in professional shows in the Western United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Hawaii. LeVonne was a member of the San Diego Dahlia Association, the Ikebond Association, and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

LeVonne is survived by a brother and his wife, Glenn “Jay” and Betty Carty of San Diego, California; in-laws, Earl and Ersal Splinter of San Diego, California, Eugene and Anita Splinter, San Diego, California, and Eunice and David Matthews of Cedar Rapids; and her nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

LeVonne was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie “Chollie” H. Splinter in 2006; her parents, Glenn and Ruby Carty; and a brother and his wife, Robert and Jackie Carty.

Together for 66 years, Von and Chollie traveled life’s highway, enjoyed it and lived it to the fullest. Today, Von is safe with Chollie and the Lord. May all their dahlias in heaven be beautiful and “prize” winners. They deserve it as they rest in peace together.
