The Clinton Daily Age, April 21, 1871

The Manchester Union gives the particulars of the accidental death of the daughter of Mr. D. H. Thornburg – Ella Lois, aged 12 years. Last Wednesday a mare belonging to Mr. Thornburg’s team. After being watered, started alone toward the stable, and on the way laid down to roll. Lois ran to the mare and pushed her with one foot to induce her to rise. The mare got up and licked at the girl with both hind feet, one hoof striking her in the pit of her stomach with great force. The child died on Thursday morning.
