Heart Attack Fells Verne Hermann, 59
Verne J. Hermann, 59, president of the Delaware county board of education and a lifelong resident of the Manchester area, died Thursday morning at Delaware county Memorial hospital after suffering a heart attack.
Mr. Hermann was a Delaware county soil commissioner for the past 15 years. A member of the Delaware County Farm Bureau, he currently served as chairman of its enviromental committee. He served 31 years as Honey Creek township clerk, was a director of the Carrington-Clyde research farm project, and a member of the American and Iowa Beekeepers associations and the Iowa Seed Dealers association.
Mr. Hermann was a member of the Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce, Hyperion Lodge No. 186, Knights of Pythias, and the Community Congregational church.
Born on the parental farm west of Manchester on Jan. 14, 1914, he was the son of Joseph and Verna Kling Hermann. He grew up on the farm, attending rural schools for his elementary education, and was graduated from Manchester high school in the class of 1932. He later attended Iowa State university, Ames.
He was married to Jean Alice Merton on June 6, 1941, at Kahoka, Mo. They farmed north of Manchester in Honey Creek township all their lives together. Mr. Hermann produced seed corn, seed oats and honey.
Memorial services for Mr. Hermann were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Shelly funeral home, with the Revs. Walter Dimmlich and Ernest Hayhow officiating. The body was donated to science at University hospitals, Iowa City.
Mr. Hermann is survived by his wife, Jean, of Route 2, Manchester; two sons, Marc V. and Brock G., both at home; his parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hermann of Manchester; a sister, Mrs. Robert C. (Josephine) Frey of Des Moines; an uncle, John Hermann of Manchester; an aunt, Mrs. R.P. Drexler of Coggon, and a number of cousins and other relatives.
