DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Gilbert J. Platz, 81, of Dyersville, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at Heritage Manor nursing home, Dubuque, after a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 137. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish and a Catholic Order of Foresters rosary at 4 p.m. The Dyersville Fire Department will meet at 6 p.m. and there will be an American Legion Post 137 service at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Platz was a mechanic and worked for Scherrman Implement for 33 years until his retirement.

He was born on Feb. 2, 1918, in Dyersville, son of Charles and Cecilia (Jasper) Platz. He married Valeria Greiner on April 7, 1942, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Luxemburg. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 137 for more than 50 years. He also was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters Court 500.

Surviving are his wife, Valeria; four sons, Robert (Rosie) and Dan (June), both of Dyersville, Charles, of Delhi, and Dale (Sue), of Omaha; five daughters, Darlene Hoffman, of Dyersville, Carol (Chuck) Wessels, of Dubuque, Sandy (Dwight) Schoening, of Glenwood, Jane (Bill) Sullivan, of Oakdale, Minn., and Susan (Brad) Helle, of Cedar Rapids; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a brother, Leverne (Jeannie) Platz, of Dyersville; a sister, Anna Mae (Art) Breitbach, of Peosta; and a sister-in-law, Norma (Lawrence) Deppe, of Dyersville.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Herb Platz; and a sister, Beatrice Platz.
