DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Emmett J. Pfeiler, 81, of 524 Ninth Ave., S.E., Dyersville, formerly of Holy Cross, Iowa, died at 3:10 a.m. Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m. The Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pfeiler was a retired farmer. Before moving to Dyersville, he farmed near Petersburg and Holy Cross.

He was born on July 12, 1920, near Holy Cross, son of William and Mary Ann (Ruden) Pfeiler. He married Dorothy (Wegmann) Esch on Sept. 25, 1965, in Dyersville.

Emmett enjoyed baseball and his favorite team was the Milwaukee Braves, now known as the Atlanta Braves. He enjoyed nothing better than a good game of euchre. In September 1964, he received the "Service to Humanity Award" from the Holy Cross Catholic Order of Foresters Court 881. His religion and Catholic faith along with his family were very important to him. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters Court 881, of Holy Cross, and St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; four stepchildren, Thomas J. (Roberta) Esch, of Naperville, Ill., Jan (David) Kuhl, of Perrysburg, Ohio, Terry L. (Laura) Esch, of Moline, Ill., and Daniel J. (Nancy) Esch, of Minnetonka, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren, Thomas, Kristin and William Esch, Jessica, Emily and Katherine Kuhl, Sarah and Alex Esch, Nina, Andrew and Brian Esch.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Marcellus, on July 7, 1985, Matthew, on May 26, 1974, and Leander, on Jan. 30, 1997; and four sisters, Cecilia Theisen, on Jan. 11, 1991, Rita Kluesner, on July 11, 1978, Anselma Brecht, on Dec. 21, 1997; and Sister Mary Herberta Platt, BVM, on July 3, 2001.

An Emmett J. Pfeiler Memorial Fund has been established.
