GILBERTVILLE, Iowa - Rev. Msgr. Edward C. Petty, 60, of Gilbertville, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with Archbishop Jerome Hanus, OSB, presiding. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Dyersville. Friends may call from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friends also may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A final visitation will be held beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica. The Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service, Waterloo, is in charge of arrangements.

Monsignor Petty had been pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Gilbertville and St. Joseph Parish in Raymond and spiritual director of Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville since 2004.

He was born on Oct. 8, 1947, in Des Moines, son of Edward and Lillian (Bosley) Petty.

He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, and taught at Wahlert High School, Dubuque, from 1969 to 1973. He then completed his theological studies at the Pontifical North American College in Rome.

He was ordained to the priesthood on May 19, 1977, by His Eminence Sergio Cardinal Pignedoli at the North American College Chapel in Rome.

He served as assistant papal master of ceremonies for the Vatican from 1975 to 1977.

He was associate pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Gilbertville, while serving on the faculty of Don Bosco High School from 1977 to 1979. He completed advanced studies at the National Catholic School of Social Services, Catholic University, Washington, D.C., from 1979 to 1981, and earned a master's degree in social work. He served as associate/acting director of Dubuque Archdiocesan Catholic Charities from 1981 to 1982, and director of Catholic Charities from 1982 to 1987. He was pastor of St. Donatus (Iowa) Parish from 1985 to 1987, and Immaculate Conception Parish in Charles City and St. Mary Parish in Roseville, from 1987 to 1992. He served as pastor of St. Francis Xavier Basilica from 1992 to 2004, and St. Paul's Parish in Worthington, from 2002 to 2004. He was executive coordinator of the Beckman School System, Dyersville, from 1994 to 2004.

He was named a prelate of honor(monsignor) on April 26, 2003.

Surviving is a brother, William, of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be given to Beckman High School and Hospice of Dubuque.
