CLARION - William Ellsworth Young Sr., 82, of Clarion, passed away Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001) at the Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion.

Memorial services for William Young will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Clarion, with Pastor Lavonne Kaasa officiating. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Post #246 of Clarion.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger William Funeral Home in Clarion and one hour prior to services at the church.

William Ellsworth Young, the son of Emma Claire Noble Young and Daniel Burdette Young was born July 11, 1919, in Delaware County, Iowa, near Manchester.

He served five years in the Army and was in England, Africa, Sicily, and Italy during World War II with the 113th Cavalry Regiment, Red Horse Unit, part of the Fifth Army.

He kept in touch with his Army buddies at yearly reunions for all of his life. The Army experience was an important part of his life.

He attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport and Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Bill was married to Lorraine Bushnell, of Manchester, on Sept. 5, 1946. To this union were born three children, Deana Young Stock, William Richard Young, and Burdette Austin Young. After moving to Clarion in 1956, Bill established Youngco, Inc. a grain care company, and later he expanded his business to include transferring grain and other products at the site of railroad derailments.

Bill is survived by his wife, Lorraine; children, Deana and husband, Mitch Stock, of Modesto, Calif., William Richard and wife, Nancy Jensen Young, of Ankeny, and Bud and wife, Bonnie Darbyshire Young, of Clarion; seven grandsons, William Grant Young, and Michael Young, of Des Moines, Greg, Steve, and Dan Stock, of California; and Tim and Andrew Young, of Clarion; four great-grandchildren, William Ross Young and Carter Young, of Des Moines, and Alexandra and Daniella Stock, of Santa Clara, Calif. He is survived by a brother, Dean Young and his wife, Claire, of Vancouver, Wash.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Noble "Bud" and Robert Young; and sisters, Ethelynne Harris, Helen Sue Taylor, and Betty Gearhart.

Bill cared deeply for his community and his friends, and was Mayor of Clarion from 1977 to 1983. He was particularly interested in youth projects and was a member of First Methodist Church in Clarion.

Memorials may be sent to Community Memorial Health Foundation, 1316 S. Main St. in Clarion.
