"Tom" McCarthy Dies at Farm Home
Long time Resident Of Prairie Township Dies Sunday after Illness of Several Years
Thomas J. McCarthy, popularly known to our people as "Tom" McCarthy and for nearly seventy years a resident of Prairie township, died at his farm home on Sunday afternoon following an illness of several years. He was nearly 74 years of age. Funeral services were held at his late residence on Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. George Winters officiating, and burial was made in Oakland cemetery.
Mr. McCarthy was born in Kane County, Ill.,April 27, 1865, and was six years of age when his parents moved to Iowa and located at Anamosa, where he grew to maturity. On Feb 28, 1889, he was married to Miss Nora Lyman of this community and they at once engaged in farming in Prairie township, Mr. McCarthy purchasing the homestead which for nearly half a century has been the home of the family. Surviving him are one daughter, Miss Phoebe McCarthy, who has given such devoted care to her father; three sons - Chester O. and Andrew ("Ike")L. McCarthy of Manchester and Harry McCarthy of Edgewood; a brother, Joseph O. McCarthy of Waterloo; a sister, Mrs. Sadie Fisk of this city, and three grandchildren. The wife and mother died in May, 1929, and a son Sylvester, at Masonville in 1910. Six brothers and four sisters also preceded him in death.
Because he was a man of singularly friendly and genial nature, Mr. McCarthy became widely known over the county and possessed friends in large number. His was a life of toil and severe industry, and those qualities gave him success in his chosen vocation. His children and the other members of his family have the earnest sympathy of the community in the sorrow that has entered their lives.
