Mrs. Whitman A `Flu ` Victim

Mrs. Anna (Hanna) J. L. Whitman, oldest daughter of Samuel Gratke and Henrietta, his wife, was born January 14, 1870, on a farm in Richland Township, Delaware County, Iowa. Soon after she was baptized at St. Sebald, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent on the farm, till her parents moved to Strawberry Point. Here she was instructed in the confirmation class and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in 1883, afterward attending public school.

On March 30, 1889, she was united in marriage to Ira Whitman. To this union one son was born, Ervin R. During her married life she, with the family, lived on a farm near Manchester till about six years ago, when they changed location on account of Mr. Whitman's health, moving to Hathaway, Montana, which had been her home until recently.

 On last Christmas she came here to make her home with her sister, Mrs. Emma Wareham, and husband, to help care for her mother, but the Lord willed it different. While assisting in the care of the sick she contracted the influenza, followed by pneumonia, to which she succumbed on February 21, 1919, at 6:30 A.M., at the age of 49 years, 1month and 7days. Her husband, Ira L. Whitman, preceded her to the beyond on September 8, 1916.

She leaves to mourn her loss her aged mother, one sister, Emma Wareham, and one brother, Godfried Gratke of this place, the only son. Ervin R. Whitman at present with the marines, stationed at Puerto Plato, Dominican Republic; three stepdaughters, Lena Addison and Lydia Straub of Lisbon, North Dakota, and Martha Jones, Manchester; One step daughter , Anna Hill , preceded her in death about 8 years ago. She also leaves an aged aunt, Anna Marschall, and one uncle, Charles Rodies, both of Manchester, and other relatives and hosts of friends.

 Funeral services were held at the home of L.C. Wareham, conducted by Rev. Fritschel; interment in the Strawberry Point cemetery.

 Relatives and friends from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. Lena Addison and Mrs. Lydia Straub and children, Lura and Donna, Lisbon, North Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. John Marschall, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Jones and son, Charles Rodies, Mrs. John Porteus. Mrs. Florence Arduser, John Whitman, Mrs. Bertha Rodies, Mrs. John Reiger, Manchester; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chevington, Aug. Kutschart and son, Arthur and Otto Kamoss, Oelwein; Mrs. Mary Ehler and daughter Iva, Arlington; Con Wareham, Dysart and J. Wareham, Springville.

Age: 49 years - 1month - 7 days
