Page 1"STORY COUNTY PIONEER ANSWERS FINAL SUMMONS C. H. DICKEY, FORMER MAXWELL BUSINESS MAN DIES AT NEVADA ON NEW YEAR'S DAY
Charles H. Dickey, a Civil war veteran and for forty years a resident of Story county, passed away on New Year's Day at the age of eighty years at his home in Nevada. Mr. Dickey was widely know in the county through his twenty years of residence in Maxwell and an almost equal number of years in Nevada. Coming to Nevada in 1905 at the age of sixty years, Mr. Dickey retired from active business life, though he acted as bailiff for the court during the sessions of the last thirteen of fourteen years. During the Civil war Mr. Dickey enlisted in the Ninth Iowa Infantry and served throughout the war. He was with General William Tecumseh Sherman on his famous march to the sea, and during all the years that have passed since the rebellion, has been active in Grand Army affairs. At the time of his death he was post commander at the Jason D. Ferguson Post in Nevada. Mr. Dickey's health failed gradually since the past summer and death came in consequence of the break down incident to old age. Those left of his immediate family are his wife, two sons, B. S. Dickey, of Nevada, and Dr. Claude Dickey, of Des Moines, and one daughter, Mrs. Edgar Dewel, now of Muskogee, Okla. And formerly of this city. The funeral services were held at the home, with Nevada Post, No. 48, American Legion, in charge, commanded by Harold Dickey, post commander and a grandson of the deceased. The service was conducted by Rev. Jackson Giddens, of the Methodist church of Nevada, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock."
Transcribers note: This is W. G. (William Gage) Dickey Sr.'s brother Charles Henry Dickey when the Civil war started he lived in Delaware Co. (Dickeyville) Ia. Charles and brother Frederic (Fred) Newton Dickey where in the 9th inf. Co D (In History book Del. Co, Ia.) There were 9 boys & 2 girls in this family, all were born in Elba (Pinehill) N.Y. and came to Iowa late 1850's.
