Norris Eugene "Gene" Baker
August 10, 1920 ~ July 23, 2001

Norris "Eugene" BAKER, son of Sherman and Gerna (BOLES) BAKER, was born August 10, 1920 on his parents' farm east of Grand River, Iowa in Decatur county and passed away July 23, 2001 at Clearview Home, Mount Ayr, Iowa at the age of 80 years.

Eugene graduated from Grand River high school in 1938.

On December 26, 1941 he was united in marriage to Mary Margaret BOORD. To this union four daughters, Bonnie, Peggy, Shirley and Julie and two sons, Roger and Brian were born.

Eugene and Mary lived and worked on their farm south of Grand River until 1956 when they moved into Grand River, Iowa. He operated an implement dealership for a couple of years and then did seasonal farm work and road construction.

In 1985 Eugene and Mary moved to Creston, Iowa where they continued to grow a large garden. Eugene enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents.

His is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary BAKER of Mount Ayr; six children: Bonnie PEARSON and husband Mel of Des Moines, Iowa, Peggy BEDIER and husband Lloyd of Ellston, Iowa; Shirley GOTTSCHALK and husband Gordon of Naples, Florida, Julie NOFTSGER and husband Morris of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Roger BAKER and wife Jill of Waverly, Iowa and Brian BAKER and wife Kelly of Belton, Missouri; 16 grandchildren: Mark and Pam PEARSON; Brenda GREENLAND, Jeff BEDIER and Kristy JARRED; Jill, Gwen and Ross GOTTSCHALK; Matt and Ben NOFTSGER; Joe, Julie and Jon BAKER; and Wendy CLARK, Brian Jr. and Kurtis BAKER; four great-grandchildren: Austin GREENLAND; Tanner BEDIER; and Ashley and Levi JARRED; his brother, Keith BAKER and sister Pauline ANDREW and husband Giffin, all of Grand River, Iowa and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 27, 2001 at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa with Pastor Rick HAWKINS officiating. Musical selections were "Families Can Be Together Forever," performed by Kelly, Wendy, Brian Jr. and Kurtis BAKER and "Peace in the Valley," performed by Charletta DURRELL.

Casket bearers were Barry BAKER, Brian BAKER, Monte BAKER, Roger BAKER, Bernell BOLES and Loren PARKHURST.

Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery near Grand River, Iowa. Memorials may be given to the Grand River United Methodist Church.
