Thursday, March 3l, l92lSAMUEL A. HAMILTON was born in Shelby County, Ohio, on the 27th day of October, A.D., l83l; died March 26th, l92l, at the home of his son, BYRON F. HAMILTON, in Leon, Iowa, aged 89 years and 5 months.
He was united in marriage to SARAH JANE BOLEN, of Greene County, Ohio, on December 2lst, l854, in Randolph County, Indiana. She died many years ago. To this union were born five children, two having died in infancy, JOHN HAMILTON, died March l0th, l9l6, and he left two living children, BYRON HAMILTON, who resides in Leon, Iowa and FRED P. HAMILTON in the State of Kansas, three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
MR. HAMILTON moved to this county about the year l862. For many years he drove the stage. He carried mail for the United States and passengers from Leon to Mount Ayr, Iowa. At this time there were no bridges across the streams and branches. It took two days to make the trip, one day to Mt. Ayr and the next day back to Leon. We think that he was one of the last stage drivers in the State of Iowa. In l87l the C.B. & Q. R.R. was built to Leon, so the stage ceased to exist. After this he went into the furniture and undertaking business being associated with JAMES GRANDSTAFF for many years. For the past seven years he made his home with his son, BYRON F. HAMILTON, and daughter-in-law.
MR. HAMILTON was a member of the Methodist Church of Leon for many years and while he was in good health was a regular attendant.
He was an honored and respected member of the community. Most of his early friends with whom he was closely associated have long gone before. The funeral was held at the home of his son, BYRON HAMILTON, Monday afternoon, Rev. T.F. Campbell, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment was in the Leon Cemetery.
