MARGARET JANE CARL, daughter of WILLIAM and ELEANOR CARL, was born near Pittsburgh, Pa., March 2nd, l837, and died at her home in Garden Grove Township, December l5, l920. She came to Iowa in l850, and was married to ANDREW SMITH in l857. To this union were born l3 children, all living, except the oldest, who died October 8, l87l. Her husband preceded her to the better land, dying Sept. 5, l889. The children are: PAMELIA E. TAYLOR, RACHEL E. WHITMARSH, JOHN W. SMITH, GEO. H. SMITH, SARAH E. JENNINGS, ALBERT E. SMITH, WINNIE M. SHOBE, LYDIA B. WATSON, MARTIN V. SMITH and IDA M. SMITH. All live in this locality except RACHEL, WINNIE and MARTIN, who live in Minnesota. She has forty living grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

She was a member of the M.E. Church in early life, but later became a member of the Free Methodists. She was a devoted mother, a faithful Christian and a kind neighbor. The funeral was at the Franklin Church, conducted by F.A. Garber. Interment was in the Franklin Cemetery.
