Decatur County Journal
Thursday, November 25, l920Entered into rest at Garden Grove, Ia., Wednesday, Nov. l0, l920, wife of CHARLES D. MALLETTE.
MRS. MALLETTE was the daughter of FRANCIS and ANNE KENDALL (SMITH) MANNEY. She was born at Plymouth, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, March l5, l855.
In l868 she came with her parents to Garden Grove where she resided continuously with the exception of one year (August l896 to March l897) which she and her husband and son spent in Tennessee.
In her childhood she attended the rural school at Pleasant Ridge and later the High School at Garden Grove. She was for several years a teacher in the rural schools of the county and in the primary department of the Garden Grove Schools.
In the fall of l88l she was elected Superintendent of Schools in Decatur County and served in this capacity for two years, from January lst, l882, to December 3l, l883.
On January l7, l884, at St. John's Chapel, Garden Grove, she was married to CHARLES D. MALLETTE. One child was born to them, FRANCIS GRISWOLD MALLETTE.
Of MRS. MALLETTE's work in the community, it is not necessary to speak at length. Her gentle unselfish care for all who were in need or sorrow, her living, earnest religious faith, her loyal friendship, her cheerfulness, the unfailing hospitality of her home, the record of all this is written in the hearts of the people among whom she lived for more than half a century.
She was for some years an active member of the Woman's Relief Corps and was a charter member of the Country Culture Club. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Regent of the first Chapter organized in Decatur County.
Her deep spirituality found expression in her devotion to the work of her beloved church, and it is not too much to say that St. John's Parish is to a great extent the fruit of her labors. Not alone in her own little parish, but throughout the diocese her work was recognized. As a tribute to her memory, Bishop Morrison, of the diocese of Iowa, had expected to be present at her funeral, but being unable to attend, he sent Dean Hengen, of Ottumwa, as his personal representative.
In her quiet, well-ordered but busy life, she found time for a deep, scholarly study of the Bible and of Bible history, and until the beginning of her last illness, she was the teacher of a town Bible class.
To the last she retained a strong, sympathetic interest in the boys and girls of the community, mentioning them even in the last days of her suffering. Many of them will rise up to call her blessed, and may they build her a most enduring monument the one most acceptable to her, that of lives devoted to the high standards which she maintained and consecrated to the unselfish service of which her own life was a constant example.
The funeral services consisted of the Communion Service at the Episcopal Church, at l0 in the morning on Friday, after which the casket remained in the care of members of the Country Culture Club in order that all friends who desired to do so might go to the Church and take leave of the remains.
Services (can't read) assisted by Dean Hengen, of Ottumwa, and the Rev. Mr. Taylor, of Chariton. This service was held in the Presbyterian Church which was kindly offered by the Pastor for this purpose, on account of the limited seating capacity of the Episcopal Church.
The casket was entirely covered by a beautiful similax blanket, the tribute of friends.
On Sunday morning, November l4th, the services at ll o'clock at the Episcopal Church was the Communion Service with prayers for the faithful continuance of the work to which MRS. MALLETTE's life had been devoted.
In a brief address the Rev. Wm. Wyckoff paid a beautiful tribute to her work and character urging her friends to carry on the work with the unselfish devotion which was the guiding principle of her life.
