Thursday, February 8, l9l7JOSIAH LANEY was born in Park County, Indiana May 7, l864, being at the time of his death, 52 years, 7 months and 27 days old.
In July, l903, he was married to ANNA ELLMORE. To this union was born one child, GLADYS E. On August 8th, l906, after a lingering illness, his wife departed this life and on September 24th, the same year, the babe followed its mother to the land of rest.
For a number of years his mother came to keep house for him. On May 2, l9l5, he was united in marriage to MISS LANEY MEEK, of Leon, Iowa, since which time they have made their home in Covington. About 25 years ago, having heard the Gospel a number of times from able men, he was baptized by Theodore J. Freed and has since lived a consistent Christian life. He leaves a mother, wife, one brother and one sister and a host of relatives, brethren, and friends to mourn their loss.
BRO. LANEY was a good and kind boy to his mother, a faithful companion to his wife, a loyal brother to the Church of Christ, friendly and courteous to all. He was strong and firm in his convictions for the right. He went through the Bible in a reading conducted by Bro. Daniel Sumner in Indianapolis about the year l895. He was a student of the Bible, a faithful teacher of the Word, and did some acceptable preaching. He was a carpenter by trade and worked at his calling until within six weeks of his death. He seemed to realize that death was about to claim him, but he was fully resigned and said, "I am ready."
The writer discoursed to a large audience gathered at the Church where he loved so much to worship, taking as his subject these words of Paul, "For I am already being offered and the time of my departure is come. I have fought the good fight; I have finished the course; I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give to me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved His appearing. II Tim. 4-6-8." His earthly form was laid to rest in the Mt. Hope Cemetery to await the resurrection of the just.
