Decatur County Journal
Thursday, January ll, l9l7

SAMUEL SCHENCK was born in Rockville, Indiana, October 28, l840, and died at Decatur City, Iowa, January 5, l9l7, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 7 days. He came with his parents to Decatur County, Iowa, in l857, and moved to Decatur City in l863, where he has resided continuously ever since.

He was united in marriage to MISS EMELINE BAKER, January 3l, l869. Their time together was of short duration, being only about one year, as her life was taken when their little daughter was born to them. The little daughter only lived to be eight months old when it was called home to be with its mother.

UNCLE SAM, as he was commonly called, was converted and joined the M.E. Church early in life and has remained a true and consistent follower of the Master ever since. For over forty years he has served the church in the capacity of recording steward, also secretary and treasurer of the Sunday School for about the same length of time. He was a carpenter by trade and built the M.E. Church and Parsonage. He is survived by an only brother, T.H. SCHENCK, of Leon, Iowa, and a host of relatives here and elsewhere.

Funeral services were conducted at the M.E. Church, Sunday, January 7th, by the Pastor, F.H. Perkins, and a ritualistic service by the I.O.O.F. of which he had been a member for over fifty years. Interment in the Decatur City Cemetery.
