Decatur County Journal
Thursday, May 23, l9l8

J.E. RICHARDS, of near Leon, was killed by
lightning last Friday
afternoon about ten minutes before one
o'clock at the home of his son,
LOREN RICHARDS, near Woodland. MR. RICHARDS
had gone to the home of his
son to help him plant corn. They had come in
from the field for dinner
and MR. RICHARDS had started to carry a sack
containing some seed corn
to the grainary when the bolt came that
caused his death. The son had
started to lead the team they had been using
to water them and the bolt
of lightning frightened the animals and they
knocked him over. He got
up unhurt and looked to see where his father
was. He found him lying
dead within four or five feet of the
grainary. Physicians were summoned
but they were unable to do anything as death
had probably been
instantaneous.

MR. RICHARDS was forty-five years and
nineteen days old at the time of
his death. He leaves his wife, one son and
three daughters to mourn his
sad death. The remains were taken to
Gosport, near Knoxville, for
burial Monday where the funeral was held that
afternoon. The bereaved
family certainly have the sympathy of all.
