Decatur County Journal
Thursday, January 6, l9l6

SAMUEL WEST was killed in an automobile
accident eight miles west of Van
Wert Thursday morning of last week. MR. WEST
had taken his brother to
Van Wert that morning, making the trip in a
new car that he had driven
but a few times. The brother wished to catch
the early train at Van
Wert and after he had boarded the train, MR.
WEST started to his home
northeast of Grand River. When about eight
miles west of Van Wert he
speeded up and made a hill on the high gear
but on starting down the
opposite side he evidently did not shut off
the gas for the speed of the
car increased and ran to one side of the road
and then back up the
embankment on the opposite side and turned
turtle.
MR. WEST was caught under the car, the back
of the front seat pinning
him down, the weight of the car crushing the
left side of his chest.

Those near rendered assistance within a few
minutes and physicians were
summoned but his injuries were such that his
death occurred that evening
about 5 o'clock. The accident occurred about
nine o'clock that morning.

MR. WEST was about thirty years of age and
one of the hustling young
farmers of his neighborhood. He leaves a
wife and three children.
