Decatur County Journal
Thursday, December 9, l9l5

CARL, the thirteen year old son of MR. and
MRS. CHARLES RUMLEY, who
reside one-half mile south of Palestine
Church, west of Leon, on the
Leon and Decatur road, either fell or was
thrown from a horse Wednesday
morning about six o'clock, his neck being
broken by the accident.

The lad had started out about six o'clock to
bring the cows in from the
pasture. He had gone to the barn and taken
one of the horses out and
was riding the animal to the pasture.
Shortly after he had left the
horse came running back to the house. The
attention of MR. RUMLEY was
attracted by the coming of the horse and he
went out of the house to
investigate. Going a little ways from the
house he saw the boy's dog
running toward him up the side of a hill. He
hurried down in the
direction from which the dog was coming and
found his son lying with his
head partly in a small hollow in the
hillside. The lad was apparently
lifeless. MR. RUMLEY summoned Dr. F.A.
Bowman from Leon and a number of
the neighbors. The body was carried to the
house. Dr. Bowman arrived in
a very short time after the accident but
found that nothing could be
done. The boy's neck had been broken by the
fall.

It is supposed that the horse had stepped
into a depression in the earth
while being urged along by the rider and fell
throwing CARL to the
ground. The funeral, we understand, will be
held probably today at the
New Salem Church. The bereaved ones have the
sincere sympathy of all.
