OBITUARY - J.M. SYLVESTER:
JEHU M. SYLVESTER was born in Meigs County, Ohio, Oct. 25, l839, and
died in Davis City, Iowa, Feb. l2, l906, being 66 years, three months
and seventeen days of age. He moved from Ohio to Decatur County with
his parents in l853 and has since resided here with the exception of one
year spent in Montana.
He enlisted in Co. G, 4th Iowa Volunteers, in l863, and was honorably
discharged June l7, l865. He was married to MARGARET L. SCHIEFELBUSH,
Feb. 28, l867, and to this union were born seven children, three of whom
survive him. Those left to mourn his loss are: MRS. H.L. MCCLARAN, of
Davis City; MRS. H.A. HUNT, of Columbus, Montana; CARL, of Oregon;
RALPH, of Washington, and ELLSWORTH, of Montana. Besides his wife and
children, he leaves three sisters and one brother, MRS. DELILA FRAZEE,
of Crestone, Colorado; MRS. TRESSIE FRAZEE, of Lenora, Oklahoma; MRS.
JULIA NORMAN, of Davis City; and MONT SYLVESTER, of Columbus, Montana,
his parents, two brothers and two sisters having preceded him.
He joined the Presbyterian Church while living in Leon about the year
l882. He was a kind father, a faithful husband, a good citizen and
leaves many friends to mourn his loss.
Rev. Heckathorn conducted funeral services in the M.E. Church last
Thursday afternoon, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Odd
Fellows Cemetery under the auspices of the Davis City and Leon G.A.R.
Posts.
MR. SYLVESTER served for many years as constable and for some time as
deputy sheriff. He was a familiar figure about the court room for a
number of years. He discharged his official duties with ability and
fearlessness. He was a man of good judgment and never forgot his
friends. He took a deep interest in political matters and in every
campaign rendered his party important service. His death creates a
vacancy that will be hard to fill. May he rest in peace.
