Arthur Roger Newberry
March 7, 1936 - April 1, 2019

Arthur Roger Newberry, age 83, of Ankeny, Iowa, the son of Arthur Benjamin and Zella Opal (McCoy) Newberry, was born March 7, 1936, at Lamoni, Iowa. He died in Calhoun County, Iowa on April 1, 2019.

Roger, as he was known, grew up and attended school in Lamoni, Iowa. As a young adult he worked on farms around Lamoni and other parts of Iowa. He later came back to Lamoni and over the years, farmed, worked at the grain elevator, Knipe Meat Packing, Lamoni School as a custodian, and learned construction to become a home builder. In 1995, he moved to Ankeny, Iowa, where he managed apartments and did roofing. He retired from those jobs, but continued to work for Thomas Bus and was on the job when he was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Calhoun County, Iowa.

Roger was married twice; his first marriage gave him four sons. He was married to his second wife for 30 years. He has been with his companion, Katherine Brindle, the past 20 years.

When Roger wasn’t working, he still kept busy. He enjoyed helping his son, Tim, with his construction business. He also enjoyed baking banana bread for family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Art “A.B.” and Opal Newberry; son, Mark Newberry; and siblings, Wayne Newberry, Wanita Toney, Charlotte Bowden, Jack Downey, and Ruby Mae Willsie. Survivors include his companion, Kathy Brindle of Ankeny, Iowa and her children; sons, Tim Newberry of Lamoni, Iowa and two others; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Marie Booth of Birmingham, Michigan and Betty Marshall of Sacramento, California; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Lamoni United Methodist Church in Lamoni, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2019, with Brother Jim Fisher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa. Visitation will be Monday, 6-8 p.m. at the Lamoni United Methodist Church. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
