Decatur County Journal
Thursday, June 24, l9l5

Little SUSAN WILLIAMS, the six-year-old
daughter of MR. and MRS. T.F.
WILLIAMS, of Decatur, was acidently shot by
her cousin, BROWN AKERS, age
about twelve years, at the WILLIAMS home in
Decatur last Thursday
evening. Little SUSAN lingered until
Saturday morning when death
occurred shortly after ten o'clock.

The little girl with several little friends,
including BROWN AKERS, was
at play in the yard at the WILLIAMS home.
BROWN had gone to the house
and secured a twenty-two rifle with which he
was playing.
The children were running about the yard and
the lad pointed the gun at
his little cousin, not realizing that a
cartridge was in the gun, and
pulled the trigger making at the same time
some playful remark to the
little girl. The ball struck the child on
the right side at the point
of the breast bone. The little girl fell to
the ground and the report
of the rifle and the frightened cries of the
children brought the mother
of the child running from the house.
The child was gathered up and hurried into
the house and Dr. Brittan, of
Decatur, and Dr. Layton, of Leon, summoned.
They realized that the
injury was a most serious one and everything
possible to medical skill
was done to save the child's life but death
came Saturday morning
shortly after l0 o'clock.

The little girl was a bright child of sunny
disposition and was loved by
everyone. Her tragic death is a great shock
to the people of Decatur
and the entire county. She was six years,
six months and twenty-six
days old at the time of her death.

BROWN AKERS, who is about twelve years old,
is the son of MR. and MRS.
BEN AKERS, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and was
in Decatur with his mother
visiting with relatives and friends. The
funeral services were held
Sunday.
